The American Continent or simply, the Americas, is the newest region of the Nationstates World Regions and is presumed the last region to be added for the community. The American continent encompasses the landmasses of North America and South America along with their associated islands and regions. It is sometimes referred to, especially by nations in Europe, as the New World. As a landmass colonized and settled by Europeans, the Americas share many common cultural traits, most notably the adherence to Christianity and speaking Indo-European languages (aside from the indigenous languages of the Americas). The Americas cover 8.3% of the Earth's total surface area (28.4% of its land area).
The northernmost point of the Americas is Kaffeklubben Island, which is the most northerly point of land on Earth. The southernmost point is the islands of Southern Thule, although they are sometimes considered part of Antarctica. The mainland of the Americas is the world's longest north-to-south landmass. The distance between its two polar extremities, the Boothia Peninsula and Cape Froward, is roughly 14,000 km (8,700 mi). The mainland's most westerly point is the end of the Seward Peninsula; Attu Island, is considered the westernmost point of the Americas. Ponta do Seixas forms the easternmost extremity of the mainland, while Nordostrundingen, is the most eastely point of the continental shelf.
